Manchester City produced an unstoppable and masterful performance, brimming with exceptional quality, to outmatch the reigning champions, Real Madrid. Their victory propels them into the final of the Champions League, where they will face Inter Milan in Istanbul.
Despite faltering in two previous semi-finals against Real, City exhibited unwavering determination at the jubilant Etihad Stadium, bringing them tantalizingly close to grasping the elusive trophy that has evaded them thus far under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.
The first half, in particular, was a spellbinding spectacle that will be etched in the minds of those who witnessed it. City’s brilliance left the seasoned veterans of this tournament bewildered, struggling to comprehend their opponents’ sheer magnificence.
This triumph only adds to City’s relentless pursuit of a historic treble, with the Champions League, Premier League – which they can secure by triumphing over Chelsea in their upcoming home fixture – and the FA Cup, where they are set to clash with Manchester United in the final at Wembley.
Manchester City 4-0 Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, showcased heroics by denying two headers from Erling Haaland early in the first half. However, he stood powerless as Bernardo Silva executed a close-range finish after 23 minutes, with the Portuguese midfielder doubling City’s lead eight minutes before halftime with a sublime looping header.
While Real posed intermittent threats in the second half, City’s goalkeeper Ederson made impressive saves, notably against David Alaba and Karim Benzema. Nevertheless, the Spanish giants were no match for City’s superiority. The celebrations erupted when Manuel Akanji’s header deflected off Eder Militao and found the back of the net 14 minutes from the final whistle.
To add further exclamation to their dominant victory, substitute Julian Alvarez sealed the deal with a late strike, courtesy of an exquisite pass from the brilliant Phil Foden.
City’s quest for their 2022–23 UEFA Champions League title will culminate on 10 June when they square off against Inter Milan.
